Pomegranates, le 8 Mai !

Today is the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. I just wanted to say it. A great number of people died on all sides. A lot of blood and tears were shed. We should remember and honour their lives and death.

My Pomegranate tree is progressing... Yesterday, I completed its blue background. Just this very background took a full 15 hours of work... Very tedious, but well worth the pain ! 

So the main pattern - the Tree itself, is complete. Truth is, the piece is not complete ! I still have to enhance it with the outside border of the niche: a floral vine with green leaves and branches, and red and cream flowers. 

 

The background of this vine will be of-white, contrasting beautifully with the blue background of the Tree.

Pomegranate should be complete in June, and flying to France later this summer.

Mosaicblues opens French Studio

In a previous post I told you how was trying to solve the problem of shipping mosaics abroad. Mosaics being made of heavy stone, ceramic and glass mounted on cement and concrete materials, they are heavy and costly to ship.

Experimentation in June 2014 showed that by building my mosaics on a fiberglass mesh I would able to reduce the shipping weight by 55 to 65 %.

I still had to be able to mount the mosaic on a solid support at its final destination, or in a workshop close to it, so I can drive to my patron's home or business to deliver and install the piece. 

Basically, I needed a finition shop in Europe.

I am pleased to announce the opening of Mosaicblues France.

My new studio is located in Saint Valery sur Somme, the very town from which William sailed to invade Britain in 1066 !

I landed in Paris with my mosaic on December 17 and started to set up the shop and work in it on December 18. 

The shop does not include heavy stone cutting or glass grinding equipment. I will simply be building frames and mount the mosaics on them.

 

My goal is to be able to simply mount lightweight, fiberglass mounted mosaics on a rigid support. These piece are still prefabricated in Alabama.

What really matters is what you like !

As I was getting in my car to drive home after Sword training 3 weeks ago, I received a surprising phone. This guy, calling from what I thought was Pakistan, asked me if I could sell him a picture of the Afghan Girl mosaic ! 

I could not exactly figure out what he wanted as he had a foreign accent (I know, he probably felt the same) so I asked him to email me the details of what he actually wanted.

I received his email the next day. He actually is an Afghan citizen, living in Australia, and his wife is going to open an Afghan restaurant in Newport NSW - close to Sidney. He had browsed on line for a picture of the Afghan girl, and my mosaic was the only one he liked ! He intended to have it printed and framed to display her in the restaurant.

I was not willing to sell a digital file, but I proposed to sell him a banner I could have printed here. We agreed on pricing and shipping costs, Amed wired me some money, and I had the banner printed !

The printing on a plastified canvas actually came out very nice. This banner is 3 x 7' ( 1 x 2 m) and should really look stunning in the restaurant. It was also much easier to ship than an original mosaic... 

Hopefully I should be able to show you pictures of the restaurant within a few month. It should be delivered in Australia this coming Wednesday June 11.

This is the first time that I sell a reproduction of one of my pieces. I was not so sure about this, but the result being excellent I will start offering this option.

For a fraction of the price of an original, one can own a beautiful signed reproduction... Something you might want to consider.
 
What really matters is what you like and how much you are willing to pay for. How you relate to the piece and enjoy being around it.
