Mosaic Fiesta 2017

A unique creative experience !

I developed my Opus Pixellatum technique in 2015 for my Yezidi Eyes series of mosaics. As I refined it this year I came to realize the huge potential of this technique to create mesmerizing and fascinating pieces.

Many of you having enquired about this I am thinking about organizing next February in Atlanta MOSAIC FIESTA : a fun and exclusive event to share with you my experience with this new innovative technique !

The principle of Opus Pixellatum is simple : From a digital picture I create a model grid. Each cell of this grid contains a number, corresponding to one color of mosaic tiles. You glue this tile on the grid. Once all the cells of the grid are covered, your mosaic is ready to grout. It is complete.

Yezidi 37 - from picture to complete mosaic

This sounds very much like “mosaic by number”. It's not ! Opus Pixellatum allows many many beautiful and dramatic variations and I’ll teach, explain and demonstrate them to you during the event.

Practically, we'll take a picture of you (Or you 'll bring one you like) and I'll create a model from it. Saturday morning you will build your mosaic on the model. Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning we will glue it and grout it on its support and you will bring it home with you !

We will use recycled glass tiles only, and there will be no cutting involved.

The event, hosted in a beautiful hotel downtown Atlanta would be all inclusive. Rooms, Food, Instructions, Models, all Mosaic Supplies and Tools will be provided and the cost would be approximately of $1,250 for the 3 days.

My good friend Shelley and I are still at the organizing stage and would really appreciate your input or questions on this project.

Opus Mixtum I

It's been a long time since I took Latin. Today I started on a new project. Something which I believe was never tempted before. Ta Da ! Outrageous ? I am going to mix 2 different techniques to realize one only piece...

Opus Tesselatum is the technique mostly used in Classical Roman mosaics. It is also the one I used to create many pieces.

I invented Opus Pixellatum to build my series of Yezidi Eyes Mosaics.

J'ai invente Opus Pixellatum pour bâtir ma série de mosaïques des Yeux des Yézidis.

Here is the piece you'll get to know as "Mixed Opus" until you figure out what it actually represents.

Et voici la pièce que vous connaîtrez sous le nom de "Mixed Opus" jusqu’à nouvel ordre - ou que vous deviniez de quoi ou qui il s'agit !

Mystery Mosaic - Mysterieuse Mosaique !

The Mystery Mosaic realized in Opus Pixellatum and Reverse Method, was flipped on July 21st at the Wiregrass Museum of Art.

Once flipped, the mosaic needs to be cleaned of all the glue used to lay the tesserae on the model, before you can grout it and bring her to completion.

Here it the Mystery Mosaic, right after I cleaned her up, under the beautiful sun of Alabama !

The Yezidis Mosaics, April 2016

I completed last week the laying of the tesserae of the last mosaic of this set. Yezidi 36 is a portrait of a young female soldier.

Yezidi 36

A very intense pair of eyes of a brave woman fighting for the right of her people to live peacefully on the land of their ancestors, practicing the religion of their choice.

Here is the model :

Please remember that because I work reverse method, I am building a mirror image of the model. Sometimes this week, I will glue a framed support on top of the mosaic, and will later flip it so we can finally see the mosaic looking very much like the model.

Yezidi 36 will be spectacular, I have learned a lot building this collection, this new Opus Pixellatum technique I am now implementing really allows for stunning effects... I will have a hard time letting such beauty go, but I am not doing it for me, but to help the Free Yezidi Foundation which works tirelessly to advocate for greater attention and assistance in favour of the Yezidi refugees.

Yezidi 13 and 20 are at the welding shop where my friend Eddie is building their metallic frames.

Yezidi 13

They should be completed within 2 weeks.

Yezidi 20

If all goes well, the whole set of 7 mosaics should be complete by mid May 2016, and we will then start thinking of the best way to organize a sale or auction.

I will donate 50 % of the profit of the sales to the Free Yezidi Foundation.

A small Asian Portait in Opus Pixelatum

Here is an animation demonstrating my Opus Pixellatum way of building mosaics.

Enjoy !

In this type of work the design part is quite long to create the model. The laying is done following numbers, so you don't see at all what you are doing... This way of laying goes usually a little faster  than if you'd work following a more modus operandi, as in for example an Opus Tesselatum work.

One could say this Opus Pixellatum is a "mosaic by number" process, and I do not have any problem with this...
