A mosaic portrait of two happy children

In May 2013, I created a mosaic portrait of Ella and Lane, the children of my good friends Natalie and Aaron from Auburn, Alabama.

in 2014, Natalie sent me a picture of the kids under their portrait !

The first thing you see when you come into the house is the gorgeous smile of the kids on the mosaic on the wall facing the entrance door !

Last week end, as I was bringing them a small mosaic derived from my Miura Project, Aaron invited me to share their meal (Great Hamburgers and grilled chicken) and he took this picture of the kids and me under the mosaic !

Knowing that people I appreciate enjoy my art daily is very rewarding to me. I feel I am contributing something positive to their family. Art should be present in everybody's daily life. We mostly remember ancient civilizations and cultures for the creations of their artists and architects.

The Yezidi Mosaic Project, Spring 2017

Once again, the Yezidi are fleeing their homeland to escape fights that broke out between two rivals Kurdish factions. It saddens me how because of other people's differences, the Yezidi who have been the victims of many genocides, are not allowed to live in peace even after the ISIS barbarians have been chased away from their land.

I created this short video to promote my Yezidi mosaic project. 

The background music is a live version of "Gimme Shelter" a 1969 song about the Vietnam war, by the Rolling Stones. I have always loved this dramatic and powerful song. It owes so much to Merry Clayton singing "Rape, Murder, it's just a shot away" at the top of her lungs.

This song, unfortunately, perfectly illustrates the horrible reality Yezidi children and adults are confronted to...

I hope the Yezidi eyes mosaic portraits sell this year. I will donate 50 % of the proceeds to Free Yezidi Foundation. For this to happen we need help to organize a sale or auction.

The Yezidis Mosaics, April 2016

I completed last week the laying of the tesserae of the last mosaic of this set. Yezidi 36 is a portrait of a young female soldier.

A very intense pair of eyes of a brave woman fighting for the right of her people to live peacefully on the land of their ancestors, practicing the religion of their choice. 

Here is the model : 

Please remember that because I work reverse method, I am building a mirror image of the model. Sometimes this week, I will glue a framed support on top of the mosaic, and will later flip it so we can finally see the mosaic looking very much like the model. 

Yezidi 36 will be spectacular, I have learned a lot building this collection, this new Opus Pixellatum technique I am now implementing really allows for stunning effects... I will have a hard time letting such beauty go, but I am not doing it for me, but to help the Free Yezidi Foundation which works tirelessly to advocate for greater attention and assistance in favour of the Yezidi refugees.

They should be completed within 2 weeks.

If all goes well, the whole set of 7 mosaics should be complete by mid May 2016, and we will then start thinking of the best way to organize a sale or auction. 

I will donate 50 % of the profit of the sales to the Free Yezidi Foundation.

The Yezidi Collection

Back from Europe, I am working on a number of exciting projects. One of them I like very much is my collection of Eyes of Yezidi refugees. 

The Yezidi - sometimes Yazidi, or Ezidi, one of the oldest minority in Iraq, follow an ancient non-Abrahamic religion. 

For this reason, Yezidi  men, women and children are tortured, enslaved, raped and massacred by ISIS. Not only is this religious persecution, it also is a Genocide. But very few people are aware of it. In fact, until not so long ago, I had never heard of the Yezidi people.

Here are the 3 next portraits :

Yezidi 13 is a young boy who thankfully is still able to smile.

Yezidi 020 is a young girl. She could be anyone's daughter, nice, sister or cousin.

Yezidi 036 is a young woman who chose to fight the enemies of her people. She could be anyone daughter, sister or wife.

The Free Yezidi Foundation is an international ONG based in the Netherlands. They provide assistance to the refugees and victims of this genocide. 

I cannot go to Iraq or Syria help these pople. But I can try to help with my Art. This is why I am creating this collection. Once it is complete, I intend to auction the mosaics, and will donate 50 % of the profit to the Free Yezidi Foundation to help their work. 

At this time, I have no idea about the way this sale can be organized, it would be good to use it to make people aware of what is really going on there. 

I created last week the models for these 3 pieces. I am using to build them a new technique I developed specifically for them.

I will post regular updates on these mosaics. 

I am presently completing other pieces of this collection, and will publish pictures of the finished pieces as soon as possible. Because I have to do part of the finishing work outside, I have been delayed by the weather. I should be able to publish the first piece within 2 weeks.

Creative Minds

Last Thursday July 9, I received the visit of 17 kids from Creative Minds Learning Center accompanied by their charming instructors ! 

Some of these kids had participated in our Spring Festival Mosaic Workshop.

I had invited their instructors Christy and Tina to bring them to my shop so they could see what a real mosaic studio could look like. 

I am not sure what they will best remember  of their visit between the figs eaten from the tree, petting the dogs, talking to  the chickens, 

... and the actual visit and explanations inside the mosaic studio.

What is important is that they had a great time ! 

I strongly believe that artists should give back to the communities that support them. No one is an island. without patrons or a market to sustain them, artists and other entrepreneurs would not succeed. 

As I explained in an earlier post, Art is the best way to develop creativity in young people, because they can immediately see the result of their own creativity; and our world will need creators. 

As I am little by little progressing in this artistic career with the support of patrons and clients, I intend to spend more time sharing my abilities with people around me.

April Mosaics

I have been working mostly on 2 pieces in April - one is a commission , a portrait of 2 gorgeous children. Because it is also a surprise, you will understand I cannot display it until it has been actually offered to their Mom, on Mother's day  - May 12. 


You will have to wait until that date to be able to see the whole piece.

I can however, show you a piece of the little girls face... 

I do believe it is the best portrait I have produced so far.

The second April piece are the eyes of the Young Afghan Girl. You have seen her face on the cover of National Geographic years ago, she was in a refugee camp in Pakistan when the Russians had invaded Afghanistan, and a photograph took her picture in 1984, which became famous. There is a great intensity in this little girl's eyes.  Years later, the reporter went back and was able to find the grown woman.



Her name is Sharbat Gula, and she is Pashtun.  Her life has been difficult, but she had survived. She now has children of her own.


Here is the last picture of the piece before I flipped her on Sunday, April 29, And am now working  on cleaning it up before I can grout her. The cleaning is a very long and tedious process, as I have to remove any remnants of the glue used to set the tiles on the model. (I am using the reverse method - Indirect pose - on this piece)

The eyes of Shrabat Gula should be ready by mid May...
