Please allow me to introduce Mariam's Eyes.

I must confess. I am a big fan of the Rolling Stones. I saw them on stage 3 times. How do the Grandfathers of Rock'n'Roll relate to Mosaics ? They don't, yet...

I was just trying to find a good title for this post and here came Sympathy for the Devil's "Please allow me to introduce myself..."

I'm a man of wealth and taste...

Funny how little things come up by association ! 

Comes to think of it, I should ask Mick Jagger to do my promotion for me ! 


Anyway, please allow me to introduce Mariam's Eyes twin Mosaics.

Mariam's Eyes are made after one previous work of mine : Green Eyes, who flew to Dubai last winter. 

Green eyes was the first one of my Mosaic Eyes portraits.  2 years later Mariam's Eyes are bigger, and differently centered. I am also using different materials. 

I am actually making 2 mosaics on the same design. One is the mirror image of the other. Twin sisters ! 

One of these mosaics is a commission for a dear French friend of mine.

Mariam's Eyes will be flying to France in June, and her sister will be available for purchase in July 2014.

3D Torso

 
This is my first 3 dimensional mosaic. Exclusively made of regular and irridescent glass and mirror tiles, this female torso is adorned with young fern-leaf looking tattoos inspired from those worn by Pict and Scottish tribes of Northern Britain of the Roman Era.







The technique is very different from the one I generally use, every thing is directly set on the fame. You also have to accommodate for the fact that ceramic - or glass, does not bend to fol,low the curvature of the frame...

I also used a different type of grouting on this piece - I wanted a copper coloured grout - which is not available on the market. I had to produce it myself - some research, some experiment... The result is beautiful.

Looking for a Name

So this is my last creation - and she has no name yet. In my archives, she is "3D Torso" - I posted pictures of her on Facebook, asking for names. I have had quite a few so far, inspired from various traditions, including pure redneck (Tits Mc Gee...)

 

This lady is made of glass tiles, her background is of black granite and black beach pebbles 

The piece is 36 x 22 " (90 x 55 cm) without the frame.

The Green tattoos are shaped like young ferns leaves

in remembrance of the war paints of the Picts, the hard fighting Scottish warriors of the Roman period - Do you remember Gwenyffar in the last King Arthur's movie ? 

Apparently, green and blue war paints were a staple common to numerous celtic populations. But the Picts may have used them more than other tribes - as their latin name "Picti" - from "pingere" - to paint - actually means "painted or tattooed people."


Her bikinis seem more modern ?  Actually, they really are not...

These ladies date from around 400 AD. This mosaic is part of the decoration of the Villa Romana Casale in Sicily.

And you thought Bikinis had been invented by a Frenchman in 1946 ?
